I don't think degrees are necessary, but I do think nobody responsible for hiring knows what the fuck they're doing. So really, this means senior level and elite positions shouldn't require degrees (because these are vetted by the most competent people) but entry level and mediocre positions should (because these are vetted by people who think memorizing the names of things is peak knowledge).

My own trajectory: * Got three associates degrees but couldn't afford certs. Memorized the names, definitions, and functions of a comprehensive range of technologies. Nobody would hire me * Went on for a four year CS degree, learned how to actually do things. Nobody would hire me

* Dropped out due to mental health issues, forgot everything, took a high stress job in an unrelated field. Went back and finished my Bachelors degree. Can get interviews again but no jobs. Degrees are a benchmark. They demonstrate growth capacity. Most people with jobs stagnate

At the moment I don't know and can't do anything but I do know that most of what I can't do is trivial to learn. A corrolary is that people gatekeeping based on inferior forms of knowledge are kind of dumb and probably not teachable beyond their narrow specializations.
