I don't think degrees are necessary, but I do think nobody responsible for hiring knows what the fuck they're doing. * Dropped out due to mental health issues, forgot everything, took a high stress job in an unrelated field. Went back and finished my Bachelors degree. Can get interviews again but no jobs. Degrees are a benchmark. They demonstrate growth capacity. Most people with jobs stagnate

At the moment I don't know and can't do anything but I do know that most of what I can't do is trivial to learn. A corrolary is that people gatekeeping based on inferior forms of knowledge are kind of dumb and probably not teachable beyond their narrow specializations.
