I think it has to do with some Jungian archetype stuff. I think if you can form a good system of sacred myths, a bet it makes a really useful god. Your dragon might have been just as good though. Also, cultural gods might help societies organize? Esoteric social science!

Realizing that the basic insight is quite similar to a Mandala: On the outside layers are earth, where you can just die. As you go further inside, there are demons. Then there is a God syllable, a treasure, that will purify you if you approach it properly. Nothing new.

If you don't know then the last thing you should generally be doing is trying to figure it out on your own. Some people manage that. And there are a lot of people out there who will take advantage, so there's no clear safe path. But in principle you should seek out teachers.
