A Democracy doesn't persecute and imprison people because of their religious beliefs, and the people actually have a real choice about who their leaders are. Where am I wrong on this?

You're confusing liberalism and constitutionalism with democracy. Rights are protected mostly by bureaucracy that obeys restrictions on its power. Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting for what's for dinner and quickly becomes tyrannical.
