      CCP is obvious. Bow your head, because they are powerful. Submit to the Party. NYT is only slightly less obvious. Apologize because *you* are powerful, as you are white/male/etc. Note this also ends in bowing your head to some Sulzberger employee. BTC is: hold your head up high

      The subtlety here is: you don't want a society where *no one* submits. That's lawless SF. And you don't want a society where no one ever sympathizes. That's a zero charity society. Finally, a society where everyone *must* be sovereign at all times means no division of labor.
