      Some atheists claim that religion is a comfort to simple minds too weak to tolerate a world without God, but perhaps I wonder if it is the other way around. Perhaps atheism is a comfort to those minds too fearful of what the existence of God would entail.

      Honestly, I think that theists who do not fear God don't fully understand the seriousness of what His existence implies. Even the love of the Christian God is not mere sunshine and roses. It is more akin to an all-consuming fire.

      It would be far too painful for them to believe that God exists, that He claims to love them, but then He let some tragic thing happen to them while other people were spared that suffering.

      The logical endpoint of atheism is simulationism and the logical endpoint of simulationism is a vast effectively eternal field of hell simulations imposed arbitrarily on whoever anyone marginally powerful dislikes. It's not comforting.
