Schizophrenia is a reversion to the bicameral mind where you get stuck. You don't have to be stuck there to visit long enough to have a religious experience. The fraction of the population that had a bicameral episode could be a lot more than the fraction that gets stuck.

That could be. I think most religious people who are saying they talk to God are probably not reporting a schizophrenic episode, but the experience of regular prayer and inner dialog with their conscience. I don't see how that makes them liars.
