Beginning to realize that Confucian and classical western philosophical admonitions to only associate with your betters aren't just obvious advice but in fact evidence of the fact most people pathologically do the opposite.
Usually it means morally, which I concede doesn't really apply to me well. Sometimes there's an intellectual or rank dimension though.

Like, Epictetus inverts it, and says that if you want status, you have to sacrifice dignity. "Paying the obolus for the lettuce" is about this. It's usually a moral criterion.
