It's the same thing as people choosing "7" for a random number. You have to prove you're capable of distinction and taste, so the best place to "prove" that is at it's apex: the point where other factors seem to have decided the matter already.

I've said it before, we're approaching an "elite of the gaps" problem where the better measurement becomes, the more obsolete these people become, and they have to go to worse and worse extremes to try to justify and rationalize themselves.
