The reason people get attracted to woo is because woo talks loudly and publicly about things that rational people only discuss quietly and privately. It is literally cowardice on the part of the intellectual elite.

On occassion I read something I'm actually supposed to and find some obscure explanation of some principle of physics or discovery of neuroscience with equally obscure but critical implications that establish the opposite of what woo peddlers are happily profitably screaming.

There are diminishing returns to teaching but nobody actually knows where the line is and a lot of smart people just sort of default to writing people off instead. As if people epistemically drowning are just bad competitors who insult the spirit of the competition or something
