Idk if it's original, I think I might've taken the idea from something I read and forgot. Tl;Dr: at the end of each era the two big dragons reach max power and they have a fight which leads to a new era and the cycle repeats. I think it would make a fun animation.
I think Pokemon of all things has a similar conceit, though I don't remember the details
