Freedom is a negative value and is incoherent without positive values specifying proper use. Formalism is a costly and imperfect form of specifying, therefore we accept that people don't have to defend their use of freedom, and assume coherent positive values, but not always true

Other problems: Sometimes people don't articulate their standards to avoid being held to them Sometimes articulating coherent standards (poorly or otherwise) can create a brainwashing vector for incoherent or malicious standards
