the whole purpose of discussing paradoxes like this, is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of different branches of moral philosophy, to understand how they do/do not map on to our preexisting ethical intuitions.

getting angry about the repugnant conclusion, is like getting mad about the Utility Monster. it's a fucking thought exercise to examine the limits of utilitarianism, it's not some sinister threat by an elite cabal, or whatever the fuck people are going on about here.

I mean it could be. A utilitarian UFAI might just create as many different people as possible for instance. It's only one step away from credible threat

it's possible, it's also possible that manmade viruses or nuclear annihilation will destroy the earth, so idk how highly i rank utilitarian philosophers as a threat

It's interesting because they represent an off by one sort of case wherein pursuing the right course of action still leads to an arguably bad outcome. Nuclear war is something most people want to avoid, so fewer pathways to it

creating as many people as possible takes a lot of consent and manpower, only takes one or two nuts to start a nuclear holocaust or release a virus

A utilitarian UFAI falls under general AI risk which is often conceived of as a runaway process that needn't require intense coordination.
