They seem to dislike it whenever I try to make any defense of myself. Buddha nature seems like a defense of self. But if I don't have buddha nature that's probably equivalent to being a non-entity which seems even worse, so catch-22 I guess.

Nah, self is implicit both linguistically and ontologically even in its denial imho. When people say things like "the self is an illusion" it reflexively generates/proves a subject which can be deluded. But then I'm probably talking about something different than others are also.
