in some hypothetical future, where social media was viewed as a utility, and free speech on it was guaranteed, i think one bullet we'd have to bite, is that there'd be zero tolerance for threats of violence. no joking about killing your friends, politicians, etc.

i think a zero tolerance policy in this area would make it much easier to guarantee people's freedom of speech in every other area, because it would largely eliminate the concern about whether incitement to violence, or credible violent threats, were taking place on social media.

even though this policy would be harsher than social media policies now in one respect, it is consistent with absolutist positions on free speech (fire in a crowded theater, calls to violence, etc.), and it would level the playing field, and allow for greater overall freedom.
