That’s pretty defeatist. Not everyone wants to spend their entire life trying to reach the top of X, and neither is that necessary for any arbitrary standard of success or emotional well being.
Good general life advice would be not to enter a profession or a field that you have no hope of reaching the top of.

It's realistic. No employer wants to hire someone who can't grow. Making sure you're aiming for a field in which you can grow is therefore important as long as you're stuck working for others.
