imo the historical context of a piece of work should be the primary lens of analysis, and is far more likely to give you insight into what the author was thinking than some bullshit tea leaf reading exercise

everyone is allowed to enjoy media however they want, and generalize it to fit their life experiences or whatever, but to pretend that this is “analysis” and not some leisurely personal activity, is nuts to me

i see this phenomenon all the time with music reviewers. they will pick up on some common incidental aspect of music production or composition, and ascribe some deep meaning to it that was absolutely not the intent of the artist.
