Alphas fight differently than Betas. More seriously, for existential stakes, rather than to maintain an image or group dynamic. Unless alpha status is purely emergent, killing all the potential alphas of a group will thus result in a leadership that perceives violence differently

Thus: Kill the alphas, negotiate with the betas is a potentially good strategy because it opens up possibilities of negotiation which are less than perfectly "rational" for the enemy in the "playing for keeps" sense that alphas have.
