Everything is dependent on everything else, therefore "independent wealth" just means a degree of wealth which renders all natural obligations unenforcable in a one-sided fashion. It means you have no natural incentive to be social. No wonder wealth drives investment in force.
Ignoring the question of whether the wealthy deserve their wealth, wealth itself is an epistemic bubble. It destroys one's ability to interpret information and respond to it.

(This is probably true at scale too: as an american I expect I have a certain degree of insulation from the realities of global labor, just as the wealthy in this country are insulated from the realities of local labor)
