I played the game when it came out and liked the janky gameplay, but when I got to the 'world breaking apart into harlequin babies' portion of the game I literally decided to give up on video games forever. For a day.
I played one for a bit before bad things happened to me that constrained me. I've completed three though.

Just stick with 3 and the Nier games and you're good! The first two aren't all that entertaining, especially not in English with all the censorship. Probably not in Japanese without all the censorship either... though Yoko Taro is cool no matter what

I showed my roommate one of the endings and had this running commentary on all the weird plot twists and censored bits. "That guy wants to fuck his sister, that guy's a pedo, that lady murders babies, that man sacrificed his hair for divine power..." Fun times really
