Interestingly the word they used at the time was used interchangeably for black/indian and/or mixed race of some kind, so theres an outside chance he was more like indian than black
Both slave ownership by natives (by the "civilized tribes") and runaway slaves interbreeding with natives were common at the time, so it makes sense to me that he was mixed race.

Yeah it seems that he was described as "Mulatto" and "Indian" but Mulatto was more of a skin tone and was often used to describe full blooded indians, but on the other hand theres some evidence he may have been a runaway slave or a free black person, so it seems very ambiguous
