I endlessly try to imagine various possible people/positions and then have them debate + put them in mock scenarios, so that by the time I read another page of a book or argue with someone in person I'm less likely to be surprised. I kinda thought this was how everyone worked.

Is this *not* how everyone works? You're not constantly building internal debating voices for marxists, primmies, randians, ecofash, rawlsian liberals, etc and more weird or awful possible ideological constructions you test out to preempt? Surely we all do this...

I used to do this but: 1. I developed an incapacitating mental illness 2. Substantive discussions basically never happen in reality so it's poor preparation 3. I don't want to accidentally give my opponents the capacity to look more reasonable and principled than they really are.
