The idea of cancelling $50k in student debt per borrower is so monstrously unfair, such an obvious sop to the upper classes and their children at the expense of the lower classes, that it's almost unfathomable that a major party supports it.

Yes, and your payments will be manageable, and, in the long run, you'll likely end up better off than if you hadn't gone to school (if what you say about being a solid STEM student is true). The idea that you should repay your debts is true and moral. Nothing false about it.
It's not real debt. It's a scam, built within a system of other scams. No one is obligated to pay student debt.
