      The most brilliant people tend to be lopsided, and so usually need support to do brilliant work. This can lead to really odd looking work histories, great work here, fell flat there. They seem risky, but without them you'll likely end up with a mediocre team.

      That kind of brilliance is such a fragile thing too, easy to crush with bureaucracy or neglect. Nurturing brilliance is a special skill, and most managers are really bad at it.

      Most teachers are really bad at it too, so there's a lot of latent undetected brilliance out there. Often manifesting as some obsession outside of work, or some facet of work.

      I've had maybe 3 mentors/managers/teachers in my life that helped me this way, and without them I'd probably be doing helpdesk IT work.
