It's not that beliefs affect reality, it's that this reality concept can't be grounded philosophically, especially once you take the notion of a multiverse seriously.
I don't think they preserve identity, just continuity of consciousness. I think of future ancestor simulations as something like a comb running through hair over and over again. "Straightening it out" to some standard or other, destroying the knots.

I don't actually want an entirely different phenomenological experience, but if the advanced statistical methods of the future aren't sufficient to achieve fidelity (which I don't think they will be) then I want something like this instead.
