The DSM is strictly a phenomenology of how atypical behaviors are perceived by psychologists. We might as well be giving people medications on the basis of how their psychiatrists answer questions like "how does the color yellow make you feel?"

Does it? I'm not sure. That certainly wasn't my experience in childhood but we've gone up a version since then. These things are always aspirational anyway and enforced inconsistently at best.
