      I think the annoyance of pedantry is vastly overstated. It provokes a hostile response because, as a rhetorical strategy, it is most effective for evasion or dishonesty on the underlying factual point. Remove that and it's just another narrow interest that bores your listeners.

      I think this is right, but with the addendum that the former association lingers even when it's pedantry for the sake of pedantry. Not sure it's easy to separate the two.

      Right, it's a similar reaction to a person lying for no reason, which most people find annoying. Not finding it annoying is a characteristic mark of a sociopath.
