True, but that kind of piety is the type that burns people at the stake and launches crusades, not the type that fosters charity and goodwill.
You could say the execution of Socrates was pointless too when they could have just extorted him. People do lots of pointless things, or things with esoteric points encoded in their genes somewhere that they themselves can't justify.

There's humanity as a machine or ecosystem and there's humanity as an ideal and Socrates served the latter. This is why collectivism is always Straussian: it treats some classes of people as cogs, as means to an end. Maybe they are. Fuck them then. But let the truth stand.
