I find it odd that so many socialists seem to put more democracy as their highest value, and yet also complain loudly about how competition is bad, making us selfish & ruthless. Democracy *IS* competition, either for elected office or more directly to get your proposal approved.
So the entire basis of Democracy not devolving into tyranny is the ability of large groups of people never to defect in a prisoner's dilemma?

Belief in the system makes it work. A bit like the way the British police don't need to carry guns. Extremists on left and right have stopped believing in democracy and want to seize power in an election to enact their agenda. They each blame the other side for this

I don't think the same people who disbelieve in Democracy are the ones running for government. There's no accelerationist candidate on the ballot. Or rather, both major candidates are accelerationist, because they're both sufficiently terrible to jeapordize Democracy.
