been called a sophist a couple times in memory, once in a more friendly fashion and once less so, and in the latter case i didn't really know what they were trying to say about me besides "you don't think the same things are important as i do" so i poked around the concept a bit

and it seems like all you really need to do is consider the truth value of propositions to be context-dependent (or possibly to consider truth values between 0 and 1 to exist). and it's like, damn, son, that's where we're gonna draw the line on this big-ass snarl word?

It's an uncanny valley thing. If you know nothing you're trainable. If you have your own ideas, which are slightly different versions of ideas some ancient philosopher "already established", you will get accused of being a degenerate fake rather than an intellectual.
