Modern conservatism from Reagan forward has constantly been an attempt to cultivate a type of "coolness" in opposition and in disdain to counterculture and Hollywood cool. Now it's been turned inside out: "conservatism" is the rebellion of the irrational reactionary.
Not irrational. It's the rationality of losers. It's how you play when you can't play fair. There are elements of this among the left also, but the story of the right has been how their language and stated values have ceased to serve them over time.
