Hierarchy is not a desirable thing. The fact that natural hierarchies exist does not explicate nor justify the need for any social ranking or further hierarchy.
Not inherently, and certainly not morally. But if heirarchy does something, anything, it might have instrumental value over and above the value of other arrangements in some cases. I would never abolish it. I would just mothball it in case those conditions ever emerge again.
It’s a pretty arcane point so I’m not gonna argue about it, but... There are certainly workable systems of government that at state oriented and they have hierarchy baked in. Others, such as anarchy, are non-state systems and could, and should be free of social hierarchy.
