Liberals will twist themselves into pretzels trying to imagine ways the other side in a conflict is well-intentioned albeit mistaken. If it's just a math error then you can point it out and everything's solved! No one wants to admit that tens of millions of people are just evil.

I would replace "a state" with "some mechanism", but this is basically my sentiment also. You can abolish many hierarchies, but not all differences. What's the difference between a difference and a hierarchy? Subjective, which we can't allow ourselves to care about, or zero sum.

Authority could be a diffuse property of all adults of sound mind though. It could be sanctioned by a combination of social expectations and some legitimizing formula or body of limits and obligations. Just as CCW has the "sheepdog" ethos as an extension of policing to civilians

It may work better than existing institutions, which ultimately stem from the same starting conditions. Everything is an outgrowth of social conditions. No institution is any more independent of context than the individuals who comprise it and interact with it

If a society tolerates individual evil it will probably tolerate institutional evil. It may even tolerate more institutional evil than individual evil because of the perceived unimpeachable mandate or legitimacy of institutions

There are advantages and disadvantages to hegemonic power in the current circumstances. But hegemony becomes harder over time. Nukes solidified large nations. Insurgency tactics solidified smaller ones. Encryption will eventually solidify almost any coherent body of individuals.
