Riding a motorcycle for many years has taught me that just because something isn't your fault doesn't mean it isn't avoidable. This informs my worldview substantially and reduces my sympathy for many perfectly good victims: diligence prevents you from being a victim in most cases

No, victims are never asking for it and never deserve it. But strangely, this reveals self preservation as at least partially supererogatory. Which means you can accurately say a better person wouldn't have suffered this, but not that suffering makes you a bad person.
