If you tell me to read a specific book I might actually do it. If you tell me to go to the library and pick out a book to read I will probably get choice paralysis in the face of the existential responsibility of selecting one text and therefore rejecting thousands of others

Note that your example in no way involves shrinking one's option space. It involves providing meta-data and filters on top of an equally wide option space.
