you can’t say that street smarts aren’t important or aren’t valid when you didn’t have to gain that knowledge? How can you judge something you don’t know about?

Practical knowledge can be just as deep as theoretical education. Combination is the best; that gives you power in both theory and application and avoids ivory towers. If I were making a tool, I'd work with people who would be using it daily for their input and advice on design.
