Since they have nothing but drowning, the act of drowning which they themselves have not even chosen and cannot rise above, this becomes synonymous with authenticity to them as a form of naked denial of reality.

Being fake can also be a way of being real. The act of gluing a mask to your face as an expensive signal that you are of the same in-group.

On the contrary, the poor are too real, it's the haute bourgeois who's fake. Poverty is the natural state of man, nature is the most authentic thing. The haute bourgeois must buy in his authenticity from outside.

There's a flash of connection when you see someone take off their mask. "Ah, you were just pretending 4 them too." Vs those who just don't have to wear masks b/c they are powerful. True poverty is also free. Freedom lies at both poles. The Mask is for the journey.
