Fingers crossed that the vast unidentified structures deep inside the earth are survival bunkers from the Earthdawn period of the Shadowrun universe.

Periodically, when the magick level gets too high in the shadowrun universe, the walls between realms break down and incomprehensible horrors flood the earth, devouring, torturing, raping, and killing everything in their path. The only thing you can do when this happens is hide.
So in the ancient past, they built giant underground bunkers which they magically sealed and these were how life managed to survive these periods.
