On reflection I don't believe that bad things are better for the people who inflict them than they are bad for the people who suffer them. I have come to this conclusion after diligent study of the characters of various inflicters has revealed marginal improvement at best.

I still think a lot of bad things are unavoidable, that the cost of good things is sometimes bad things elsewhere, etc. But I don't buy into the rationale for pure sadism anymore. Sadism is negative sum. It is more negative sum than alternatives even if everything is negative sum

If the world is just slowly bleeding to death in terms of utility it can still exsanguinate more or less slowly or peacefully, in fact that would be the essence of morality by most metrics. And the exciting, aesthetic alternative is just some bizarre gamblers notion
