Arendt argued that humans were essentially reaching post-scarcity precisely as they forgot all values besides work. But I worry that they are reaching it as they forget all values period.
There's something very ugly about realism; about making only promises that could, in principle, be kept. It suggests that a person's sense of what's good in absolute terms has atrophied.
