Buy several guns. You should have an everyday carry gun, a holdout, and a home defense gun at minimum. Also, don't let anyone sell you on a j-frame revolver or equivalent because "they're good for girls", there are better options and guns are pretty gender neutral ergonomically

Second that on the J-Frame. It’s a toss up between my 454 Casull and my airweight J-frame with Super Vel ammo as to which is the most unpleasant to shoot. Think hitting you open hand with a spatula as hard as you can. It definitely bites.
