The bad idea of the day is meritocracy. People think meritocracy is rule by the best suited. But that's aristocracy. That's the goal. Meritocracy is rule by that kid in high school who was obsessed with good grades, and thinks doing his homework entitles him to power.

Actual real merit "aristos" is not formed by being good at studying for the test. It's about holistic knowledge and skill. But it's also not just about individual qualities. Humans are social. Real merit is just as much about what relagionships you have, and who can trust you.

Once you acknowledge the social nature of humans, and the primacy of trust and loyalty to real merit, people getting elite position because of who they are doesn't seem so silly.
