Deontology is just ritual for ritual's sake. It's no more justified as a moral system than sacrificing cows.

When proprieties and music do not flourish, punishments will not be properly awarded. When punishments are not properly awarded, the people do not know how to move hand or foot.

I'd always thought of it as Deontology because the emphasis is on what a gentleman does rather than what a gentleman is. Duty, especially to ones parents, plays an outsized role. There are even animal sacrifices, which goes directly to your comparison.
