It was a multiverse travelling conduit mainly. The Affront wanted it to secure military dominance, there was a Culture conspiracy to entrap the Affront to teach them a lesson, the Elench wanted to learn, the main Culture wanted it's science I guess
Finished Excession by Ian Banks, which is the first book I've finished in a while and something like my 5th Sci fi book in a row. It was good. Next book will probably be Surface Detail.
