I have 2 rules of RPG video game writing 1. At the end, the hero should get to look the villain in the eyes and kick them in the dick 2. the player should get to really appreciate how the world has changed after their play I’m surprised how often major releases mess this up

I am *still* upset at how badly Mass Effect: Andromeda messed this one uphttps://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1109399068889890816?s=21 …

0:10visa is stretching (hips) @visakanvthe most offensive thing about mass effect andromeda to me is that they didn't let you kick the villain in the dick. you play for what, 70, 80 hours, building up to this moment... and he just falls and drops dead. wtf is this??? I don't feel bad spoiling this for you, it sucks pic.twitter.com/K5sDF3MURVShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 12 likesShow this thread -

Anime understands 1 very well. In fact lots of anime’s draw out final battles tremendously, throwing in things like entire episodes worth of flashbacks mid-battle. And it’s not just about the violence - it’s about the clash of philosophies, worldviewshttps://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1091983703138480131?s=21 …

1:48visa is stretching (hips) @visakanvIt’s interesting to rewatch Rurouni Kenshin in 2019. I last watched it around 2005 or so Kenshin’s worldview clearly is one of the things that made an impression on me, and is part of the lattice structure that keeps me from turning into a selfish sociopath pic.twitter.com/jq4bHnfMvKShow this thread2 replies 0 retweets 24 likesShow this thread -
A video game is a particularly large ask. You’re asking players to invest 50, 60, 70 hours of their time, sometimes doing really tedious and menial tasks, fetch quests and so on. It has to all be for *something*. And you have to know what that something is

For a micro-example of 2 - take a look at strategy games, build-your-base type games. It’s very satisfying to build a base even over 20-30 minutes. You can’t neglect this in a 70-80 hour story. The player should get to feel like her time *mattered*https://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1084472363477946370?s=21 …

visa is stretching (hips) @visakanvThere's this "build your city" or "build your skill tree" dynamic in a lot of fun video games that I've never quite seen beautifully explored in a non-gaming context In Heroes 3, you start out with a simple city (left) then you upgrade it bit by bit (right). very satisfying pic.twitter.com/VtaYg3uA9rShow this thread1 reply 1 retweet 15 likesShow this thread -

In God of War, the heart of the game is about Kratos’s relationship with his son - about what it means to be a father, what it means to be a son. Guys play this game and then want to be better dads, feel closer to their own dads. Storytelling can do thathttps://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1093088898358497280?s=21 …

1:49visa is stretching (hips) @visakanvEnjoyed this video from@noclipvideo interviewing@corybarlog about directing God of War. [17m] This bit about the game impacting a player and his relationship with his own father, to me this is the heart of art itself https://youtu.be/FQQh8L1Rf7g pic.twitter.com/w9ECezW28TShow this thread1 reply 4 retweets 19 likesShow this thread -
Once you understand that storytelling can do this, why settle for anything less? Every moment is an opportunity to really dig deep and really move people. But story sometimes seems like an afterthought for some games, which I think is a waste. So much precious attention, wasted

When I say “look the villain in the face and kick them in the dick”, the emphasis is actually on the “look them in the face” part. In recent memory, Black Panther handled this particularly wellpic.twitter.com/74718Z7rf3
