Disdain for the ineffectuality of book learning tells us a great deal about the average person's inability to learn from books, and very little about the actual value of book learning.

Like, if you're a hiring manager, and all you know is that someone claims to have learned from books, you're essentially betting that they have a +2SD IQ if you hire them, which is a bad bet in almost every context. Hence you happily throw away both the very best and the worst.
