I'm also trying to think of a shortlist of novels I retain *deep* connections to that didn't dissolve over time. Obviously Jurassic Park. Most of Iain Banks' corpus. Three of Ken Macleod's Fall Revolution books (I can't stand Sky Road, too authcom).
What are Iain Banks' best novels? I've read Consider Phlebas, which was ok-ish, and Player of Games, which I loved. Tried to read Use of Weapons but it didn't hook me. What else is like Player of Games? Is it ok to skip around at random or will I lose context?

I loved his more self-indulgent crunchy SF the most, so stuff like Excession and Surface Detail. But if a book made up of emails between AIs isn't your bag...
