It's not an accident that virtue signaling is largely decoupled from virtue. Virtue is mostly a game of chicken in which people try to incentivize each other to violate much saner patterns of self-interest in often suicidal fashion for the sake of other people's benefit.

Wherever there is a lot of talk about virtue there is not yet any virtue, and yet as soon as virtue appears the discussion is all about the foolishness, excess, or vice of the virtuous. If the average person could understand virtue they couldn't live with themselves.
