Wrestling with this right now. Not signalling idealism avoids the cost of being detectably inauthentic by others, but incurs the cost of exerting a depressive influence on those around me ('depressive' in a trajectory sense, stifling, like a dampener - rather than 'depression')
There's a scale from pure opportunism to pure idealism, but nothing on that scale is intrinsically hypocritical: However, there are also uniform costs to not signaling some level of idealism regardless of how idealistic you actually are.
