      Here Zizek makes an interesting claim about failure and justice in a capitalist society. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajr8qQcZWPo …

      Zizek via Hayek: "that's why capitalism is tolerable. Even if I lose, I can always say to myself, 'yeah, because that guy is lucky, and so on'... a *just* capitalism, where only those that work hard become rich, would explode instantly, would become narcissistically intolerable."

      Why does this claim work, what makes capitalism tolerable? Haven't read Hayek, so I'll interpret with some assumptions: - capitalism has effectively random winners and losers - losers respond to failure with a scapegoating impulse (i.e. desire to externalize their failure)

      If winners under capitalism are random, then they are not easily culpable as scapegoats (even rationalizations must be rational to a degree). The result is losers scapegoat the system itself. And capitalism-the-system does not care whether you hate it.

      In a perfectly just capitalism, the systematic scapegoating would just escalate one level, until everyone hated God instead of capitalism.

      What would it mean for a capitalism to be perfectly just? What are the essential boundaries of justice?

      That's a good question, and one I am investing a substantial amount of energy into trying to solve in the concept of post-scarcity non-coercive societies (which are dubiously but cladistically capitalist).

          A concept I've been playing with recently is the mismatch between "base desire" and the market. To participate in capitalism, a person must convert their unfulfilled desire into the purchase of a specific product. If this conversion process fails, people are left unsatisfied.

          @simpolism Retweeted Chris Johnson

          This "correct way of thinking" @ckhonson mentions is the rational and correct matching of desires to products. If you fail to do this, you risk having "revealed preferences" and overall unhappiness.https://twitter.com/ckhonson/status/1024318394634395648 …

          In this view, "revealed preferences" is a way of shoving caveat emptors down every layer of the stack for people not oriented to the correct way of thinking (satisfying all natural / biological / psychological needs in healthy ways). "Oh, you must have _wanted_ to die unhealthy"
